The Mesh Potato 2.0 or MP2 is based on the Atheros AR9331 chipset which is a WiFi System-on-a-Chip (SoC) chip with an 802.11n 1T1R (1×1) router in a single chip. It has a MIPS 24K processor operating at 400MHz.

The MP2 has the following features:

  • 16/64MB flash/ram memory configuration
  • Two Ethernet ports
  • High-speed UART for console support
  • USB 2.0 host/device mode support
  • GPIO/LED support
  • JTAG-based processor debugging supported
  • Standard power supply 9-15VDC

The MP2 is available in the following versions:

MP2 - Basic

Base unit with all of the above configured as an indoor unit in a standard housing with an internal antenna.

An optional external antenna version is also available.

MP2 - Phone

The MP2-Phone is an MP2 Basic with an FXS daughterboard installed. The FXS subsystem is a full-featured FXS device based on the Silicon Labs Si3217x chip. This allows an ordinary POTS phone to be connected to the Internet. MP2 Phones can dial each other at no charge on the local network and can be connected to the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) via any VoIP service provider.

the MP2 RACHEL is an MP2 Basic with 32GB USB/SD card with the WorldPossible Project's RACHEL library Rachel Project and other material pre-installed, allowing for free local access to educational content. It is intended for use in a classroom as a simple content server appliance for up to 30 users.

The MP2-AWD is based on the same core as the MP2 and is packaged in an outdoor enclosure with additional features and capabilities, most notably a second radio capable of 2T2R operation on 2.4 and 5GHz bands.

The MP2 AWD has the following features:

  • Everything already included in MP2 Basic:
    • Atheros AR9331 SoC with a 2.4GHz 802.11n 1×1 router in a single chip
    • Internal antenna for 2.4GHz operation
    • 16/64MB flash/ram memory configuration
    • Two Ethernet ports
    • High-speed UART for console support
  • A second radio module based on the MediaTek/RalinkRT5572 chipset which supports IEEE 802.11bgn 2T2R (2x2 MIMO) operation on 2.4 and 5 GHz bands. This chipset is widely used, including in the TP-Link TL-WDN3200 USB wifi device.
  • Internal SD card slot capable of supporting local content serving, data caching, and general data storage applications.
  • Internal USB port which can be used for a memory device , GSM 3/4G dongle or other USB devices.
  • PoE/TL adaptor which will carry Voice/Data/Power via a single Cat5/6 cable to the MP2 AWD. Similar to a passive PoE connector but also carries voice telephone line connection allowing phone to be plugged in remotely from MP2 AWD
  • Two models of the MP2 AWD will ship with antenna options for the additional radio module:
    • Internal antennas for 2.4/5GHz operation.
    • Connections for external antennas using RP-SMA connectors.
