Flashing a Ubiquiti Bullet M2HP with SECN

Author: PeterRetief

I used the Ubiquiti web interface to set the ip address and gateway, so that the Bullet would have Internet access. I changed the default ubnt user password to xxxxxx, then used ssh to access the Bullet command-line using usercode ubnt, password xxxxxx

Following (broadly) this article:

but using the "Attitude Adjustment RC2" version firmware rather than the snapshot in the example URL.

   XM.v5.5.3# url="$url/openwrt-ar71xx-generic-ubnt-bullet-m-squashfs-factory.bin"
   XM.v5.5.3# echo $url
   XM.v5.5.3# wget -O /tmp/fwupdate.bin "$url"

   XM.v5.5.3# /usr/sbin/fwupdate -m
/usr/sbin/fwupdate: About to run firmware update

At this point, after the firmware has been updated and the Bullet reboots, it is running OpenWrt, and you can telnet to the default IP address of (User root / no password).

   telnet (no password):

Used passwd to change root password to xxxxxx

Once the root password has been set, you can use ssh instead of telnet to reach the Bullet. I disconnected, and then reconnected to using ssh root/xxxxxx

Using a web browser (, I set the correct IP address and gateway.

I then reconnected the web browser to the new IP address.

I downloaded the selected SECN software to my desktop PC. In this example, the latest software was:

I then used the Openwrt Luci web interface to do a firmware upgrade to the SECN firmware, **** choosing not to keep existing settings ****

        • Note: It is important to un-tick the "Save Settings" checkbox before upgrading, otherwise the SECN settings will not be loaded correctly.

After the firmware upgrade, I connected to the default SECN IP address for the Bullet:, and the following web page appeared:
